Figure and thing
I would like this term to focus on the relationship of the figure with her surroundings..
this can be
1: SIGHTING : relationship in proportion and scale( as in how big is she in relation to the table)
and how these change when viewed from different angles(ie from above and from below)
2:PROXIMITY: relationship of nearness and connectedness between the things and the model-
3: TONES:relationship of the tones in the composition..how dark they are in relation to one another
4:EMOTIONAL RELATIONSHIP: also tuning ourselves in the the psychological and emotional relationship of the person with her surroundings and things…if you look at Hammershoi you get a sense of his model(his wife) being intimately linked to the domestic objects in that lovely old apartment where they lived and he worked. This is very much an intuitive process…
we started on day one working form Hammershoi with the following exercises to acquaint ourselves with how he went about his composition.
None of these exercises are about making something beautiful on the page.In fact it is better if you do them “blind” and do not look at your page when doing them!
1:Continuous line: a roving untrammelled line which runs through forms linking all the parts of the composition. This exercise bears little ressemblance to the original. It should end up looking like an unravelled skein of wool, having a sense of the energy of the original
2:Horizontals, verticals and diagonals
This exercise helps us establish the building blocks of the composition..as in what the artist used to make it work
verticals giving strength
horizontals giving balance and calm
and diagonals giving movement.
and with Hammershoi we must see the curves as well…which give warm rhythms
here is Picasso’s Girl and Bird to get you thinking!
